The Price Of A Desktop Pc And What Influences Them

By Andrew Johnson

There is a great variety of choice when buying a desktop PC, so it is easy to get confused. Thousands of dollars can be spend on them whilst others can cost merely a few hundred. I thought it would be a good idea to educate you on the main reasons for this difference in price.

As you would expect the first thing that will affect the price of a product is the manufacturer. For example a PC made by Sony is likely to cost more than an identical specification PC made by Packard Bell say, this doesn't necessarily mean the Sony is better but the chances of the Sony being made from more robust components is greater as they are better able to negotiate cheaper contracts with higher class component makers such is the stature of their name.

The second thing that will influence the price of the PC will be what operating system the PC is running. Generally if a PC is running Windows and has the same specification as a PC running Macintosh, the Windows machine will be cheaper. This is partly to do with demand for both operating systems (Windows being the more desirable) and partly the functions that each operating system provides. Windows is geared towards home use whilst Mac's are used more for technical drawing and design.

Thirdly and this is the most important factor, the price depends upon the technical specification of the PC. I will discuss a few of the main components that contribute to price rises.

The main component within the PC is the Processor; the processor completes the tasks that are set it by user. The faster the processor is able to run then the faster it is able to complete its tasks. Processor speed is measured in Hertz (Hz) so the bigger the number of hertz on the advertisement the faster the processor can run.

The next component is the Graphics Card, this is the card that displays the pictures that can be seen on the monitor whether it be a video or the mouse cursor. To this end the graphics card is an extremely important piece of kit and thus being expensive to use. As the graphics card uses so much more space converting all this data to visuals it requires that is has its own dedicated memory. The more memory a graphics card has the more expensive it is generally. The size of a graphics card's memory is measured in bytes.

The third factor that affects the price of a desktop PC is the RAM, Random Access Memory, don't worry you don't need to remember that I just thought some of you might like to know. The RAM is the part of the computer that gives the processor its work. When you request a task to be done it is first stored in the RAM below the previously requested task. The more RAM in your machine the more tasks you can ask the processor to do and as such increase the speed at which your computer runs. - 31403
